W artykule dyskutowane jest występowanie gruźicy (TB) w świecie i w Polsce jako niezwykle ważnego problemu zdrowotnego. Autorzy wskazują, że w krajach zachodnich TB dotyczy głównie osób starszych, a w krajach rozwijających się - subsaharyjskich występowanie TB jest największe wśród młodych dorosłych i dzieci. W krajach Afryki zapadalność na TB wynosi 259 przypadków/100 000, a w krajach zachodnich 10-20 przypadków. Autorzy przedstawiają także zasady leczenia według zalecanej przez WHO strategii DOTS.

This review discusses the global burden of tuberculosis (TB) and prevalence of this disease in Poland underlying that TB is currently an enormous global health problem. The authors point out that in most western countries TB affects mainly older individuals, whereas in developing nations i.e. sub-Saharan Africa, the incidence of TB is highest in young adults and children. In some African regions, the estimated incidence of TB is 259 per 100 000 population per year whereas in Western Countries there are between 10-200 cases. The authors also present treatment of TB according to DOTS strategy which is propagated by WHO.
